Goodtime John – Dark Slipped It’s Cloak (Self Released, 2009)

gtjdarkNick: Nice photo.

Goodtime John?

and is he? or…..has he?

has he a good time?

all the time.

he sounds like one of those old delta bluesmen, is he?

so he’s like Mumblin’ Deaf Ro then?

he wants to trick you.

is it your speakers or is his voice being drowned out by the music?

it’s just the way it’s mixed I guess, doesn’t sound too drowned out to me.

it’s quite nice music, nothing…..quite gloomy.

they bore me quite quickly if everything is at the same slow tempo.

and this tempo is not just slow but gloomy too.

it was recorded by Phil Elverum, last week you called his music gloomy.

I’m consistent.

there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, if you know what I mean.

obviously we’re in the…..

I guess we’ll never know.
This is Autumn music and it is free.

Chain And The Gang – Down With Libery… Up With Chains! (K, 2009)

{track 4: Reparations}

Nick: up to this number, I found it quite interesting, it’s quite simple and…

suddenly when that number started I thought it was totally phony, I’m afraid.

it didn’t ring true.

‘let’s have a protest song’

but there are a lot of things I like about this.

I like that they keep it extremely simple.

I especially like the New Orleans brass band percussion, as I’d call it.

that’s great.

it’d be a lot better if they stayed away from political themes, it just doesn’t ring true.

why not?

it’s like they thought ‘we sound like the kind of band who should have some political themes, so…’

seems to have absolutely no conviction.

so this band of mainly, actually probably all white people playing, as you said, ‘New Orleans percussion’…that rings true more than their political songs?

it does.

because it’s not like they’re trying to recreate that, it just sounds like that.

give some kids some percussion instruments and you’d have something as simple.

so are you saying people from New Orleans are child-like?

hahaha no!

you are drawing the wrong conclusions, and you’re doing it purposely.

I guess it’s just down to personal taste more than anything, I’ve never liked political music.

”How do we describe our sound? Something we just found, yeh we dug it up, outta the ground!”

Karl Blau – Nature’s Got Away (K, 2008)

Nick: who does he sound like?

someone else I know.

do you know?

no idea?

nope, you mean just in the voice yeah?

is it the guy from lambchop? kurt wagner?

yes! that’s exactly it. though the guy from lambchop is a bit lower.

it’s very nice, but some of the experimental bits just don’t come off, when they do it’s quite interesting.

it reminds me of lambchop all over now, not just the voice.

you need to stop using the word ‘nice’ I think

do I use it too often? I’ll try and change, it’ll be difficult, there’s not many words that can take it’s place.

um…yeah that’s not really the same thing though is it?

maybe I’ll just say lambchoppy from now on.

I don’t quite know why I like it but I do.

it’s sort of…. it’s quite…. intriguing.

ok it’s over.

sorry, but it’s nice stuff.

Hey, wanna kick up dust in the forest and watch as it glistens in the shafts of light that break through the tree tops? Me too! but it’s raining and we live in a horrible grey city, the best we could do is kick up some puke at a traffic light or that ‘why go bald?’ sign or we could listen to ‘Nature’s Got Away’ by Karl Blau, it’s up to you.

The Etc’s…

Sorry for the lack of posts this week, Nicks been very busy and I’ve been diligently working on the top 20 (which has now become a top 25, 26 actually, as two albums share the 23rd position). So the plan is to hopefully count down the top 25/6 in 4-a-week increments starting from next monday and ending some time in December.

And from then onwards? I’m not sure, hibernation? pictures of nick and me eating chocolates? business as usual? We’ll see.
